Ok, I figured I'd type it here, so I didn't have to type it a million times individually on AOL. It's long, but hey, it was pretty much the most important day of my life so far, so I didn't want to leave out any details ;-) Oh, and I like telling stories.
Quick Backround (Feel free to skip):
The only hint Tom ever gave me towards his proposal was that it would "involve a time machine". That's it.
We decided to have my great grandmothers diamond reset to a new ring.
I would have had to go with Tom anyway to get it done to choose one, so we agreed that I could just go pick out a setting and get it done, and he'd pick it up.
The new setting came in on saturday, so we dropped off my great grandmothers ring.
They told him he could pick it up after 8pm.
We hung out at the mall for awhile, and i wanted to go home and rest for a little bit before we went to my friends house later that night.
He said he wanted to stay and pick up the ring, so he wouldnt have to go back tomorrow.
I go home, take a nap, and wake up to find him looking totally lost saying "it's so beautiful, I don't know how I'm going to keep it from you"
He gave it to my mom to hide from me, and we left to go to a movie night with a bunch of my friends....
From there...(Feel free to skip to the last paragraph to see how it ends if you don't feel like reading, haha)
We watched movies at Jennie's house. Everyone stayed til around 1 or 1:30 and talked, and then went home. I was getting sleepy, so I asked Tom to drive. We get to my car and I realized I left my phone on the table, so he pulls the car in front of Jennie's house to get it. A cop pulled up behind me, so i jumped into the driver's seat and moved the car out of the way. The cop then turned around and came back, so I had to move again. He then pulled behind me and turned his lights on. I asked him what was wrong and he said "well i dont know, you keep driving up and down the street here and turning around...its pretty late...what's goin on?" I was blown away by the idiocracy of this question, but managed to bite my tounge and tell him I was waiting for my boyfriend. He then left. I ran into the house to tell everyone, cuz I couldn't figure out what was taking Tom so long....little did I know he was showing everyone the ring and explaining what he was gonna do...
...we all laugh about me getting "pulled over" and then headed out again. Tom starts making wrong turns and going in the complete opposite direction of my house. I asked him what he was doing and he said "Well, we could go home now, but we'll probably just fall asleep, and that would be a waste...let's just drive and talk and listen to music, it'll be a fun adventure!" I kinda woke up and became excited by the idea...so off we went...(it's really easy to get me lost, so it didn't take long til I had NO idea where we were).
We drove for about 2 hours...from kiski to 422west...from 422west to 79?...and he said
"let's stop at the eatnpark at this next exit!" (NOTE: Tom never makes ANY decisions or ANY plans to go ANYWHERE...he always leaves that to me....the suspision begins)
"I'm not really hungry"
"are you hungry?"
"so why are we going?"
"you can grab something small...or coffee! you can get coffee!"
"i hate coffee"
"it's ok, well we just take a break from the road" (....the suspision continues)
We grabbed a quick bite, and Tom continued to get more nervous and weird. the "break from the road" i found later, as I suspected at the time, was a last ditch effort for him to get his nerves together).
We drive for another half hour or so, it's about 4:15 at this point when he cuts me off and turns off the radio and says "shhh...i think i heard your car make a noise" (NOTE: to anyone that knows my history with cars breaking down, the thought of the focus making a "noise" in the middle of a freezing cold night in the middle of nowhere, was terrifying to me). But he says he'll just pull over and check. Right then my mom calls to make sure everythings ok, cuz it's pretty late. I hang up with her and tom gets back in the car with the hood still up. He tells me that it was what he thought it was, and wanted to show me how to fix it if it ever happened when I was alone.
I get out of the car and go to the hood. Tom didn't get out of the car. I look down and see a piece of paper on the engine that says "time machine" with an arrow pointing to the car. There was another piece of paper labeled "flux capacitor" (The thing from Back to the Future that created the time machine...yes...we're huge dorks)
I took the pieces of paper and shakily got back into the car. Tom pulled my hat down and wrapped my scarf around my face and said "time travel is very dangerous, you need to shield your eyes". The next 20 minutes or so of driving are pretty much a blur...we exchanged a few nervous laughes and comments. All of the sudden the car stops and he says "ok hold on, I have to make sure we arrived at the exact moment in time". He came to my door and told me to keep my eyes closed and follow him. I realized I was walking down a brick road, and I started to cry a little.
He walked me up a flight of steps, then he leaned me against a wall, told me to sit down and said "give me like 5 seconds and open your eyes" I waited and then removed the scarf from my face. I had just enough time to realize I was sitting where I thought I was...outside of Mr.Smalls...sitting on the porch, in the exact spot I was when we met. He came out of the front door, just like he did when we met, and walked over to me.
His eyes got really big and he said "Oh my God...you are the most beautiful girl I've ever seen. Oh my God. You're just so smart and funny and pretty and wonderful. Wow, I don't know what to say."
At this point he came over to me and reached out his hands to lift me up. As he did that, he got down on one knee and said "you are the most perfect girl in the world. I'm so madly in love with you, and you've given me more than I could ever ask for. I want nothing more than to be with you until the day I die.......will you marry me?"
I was reduced to a puddle of tears at this point, but managed to sputter out a "yes". He put the ring on my finger and stood up to hug me. As he did that he whisphered in my ear "that's how the first day I met you should have gone".
I laughed and told him that probably would have freaked me out, and we both laughed through the tears and hugged and kissed and shivered as the snow fell around us at 4:45 am. It was the most amazingly beautiful, surreal, fairy tale moment that, in time, will become one of the warmest memories of my life. I am so excited to grow old with my best friend.
